The serene and beautiful crystal that is Rainforest Jasper!

Rainforest Jasper, also known as Rhyolite or Green Rhyolite, is a beautiful crystal that is very underrated, in my opinion. The colors and inclusions make this such a gorgeous piece to look at!

Background information!

Rainforest Jasper was introduced into geology in 1860 by the German traveler and geologist Ferdinand von Richthofen. Rainforest Jasper is a super unique type of rhyolitic lava which is associated with volcanic activity. This stone get its name from looking like a rainforest with all of the green, yellow, white and brown coloring. The patterns that can show up in this crystal can also look like leaves and vines. Similarly to Moss Agate, Rainforest Jasper can look like there’s organic matter trapped within the crystal. This crystal is only mined in Central Queensland AU at Mt Hay volcano which is about 38 kms (23.6 mi) west of Rockhampton.

Geology!

The formation of Rainforest Jasper is incredibly interesting since this crystal formed from a molten flow of magma about 120 million years ago. This crystal formed within the Mount Hay volcano and can only be found in that one spot to this day. Thick rhyolitic magma that was inside the volcano settled down through the lighter magma. Gas bubbles got trapped in the lava flow during solidification which created pockets. These pockets were later filled by flows of siliceous material such as Agate, Jasper, Quartz and other minerals. Due to how the gas bubbles were filled in, nodules of minerals can be seen within this stone giving it the look of leaves, plants and organic matter.
The chemical formula is SiO2, but the impurities within the stone can be added onto this base Jasper formula. It has a hardness of 6.5-7.

Metaphysical properties!

Rainforest Jasper brings stability, happy energy and mental clarity. This is a good crystal for bringing you back to the present and reminding you to slow down and appreciate each moment. This crystal also connects you with the earth and provides grounding energy and strength. From renewing your mind and body to fostering a sense of growth and harmony, Rainforest Jasper is a good stone to have in your daily life. If you’re struggling with emotional well-being, balance and resilience, Rainforest Jasper could be the crystal to help pull you through this journey.

Fun facts!

- This Jasper (although technically another Quartz crystal) can have inclusions of Opal.

- This crystal was introduced to the market in 1986.

- The rhyolitic material seen within Rainforest Jasper can also be seen in ‘Thunder Eggs’.

- It was formed during an eruption of the Mount Hay volcano in Australia.
