Ibis Jasper and its unique formation!

Some background information!

Ibis Jasper is an incredibly unique stone that gets its name from the Ibis bird. Madagascan Ibis birds have a color palette of brown, red, white and blue which is similar to the crystal. The Ibis is associated with the Egyptian deity, Thoth, who is the god of wisdom. Ibis Jasper is found in Southern Madagascar and there have been reports of this material being found in Australia. Ibis Jasper is a trade name for Brecciated Jasper which refers to stones that are broken apart and naturally put back together by another mineral. This type of rock is commonly created by weathering or the movement of water.

How does it form?

Ibis Jasper (SiO2) forms when fragmented pieces of this material are repaired and “cemented” back together by quartz or chalcedony. The repairing quartz looks like veins as it fills every crack within the stone. The stone starts off as a solid rock but slowly loses pieces and strength as the Earth moves and shakes the rock. Heat and pressure are what make the Quartz types stick to the stone and repair it.

How do you tell Ibis and Polychrome Jasper apart?

Ibis and Polychrome Jasper are both found on Madagascar, have similar features and have similar color palettes. With so many similarities, it can be difficult to know which stone is which and how to identify them. The main difference here is the veins of Quartz and Chalcedony that you’ll see within Ibis Jasper. Polychrome doesn’t have any noticeable quartz inclusions and won’t have a “crackled” look to the crystal. Polychrome also has desert-like colors ranging from neutral to pink/purple.

Metaphysical properties:

Because of how the crystal forms, it’s said to be a good crystal for PTSD, emotional trauma and support during stressful times. Spirituality can experience a boost after a traumatic event and Ibis Jasper will be there to help. Not only does it help with major emotional and mental problems, it also helps to aid in creativity and offer a new perspective on a situation or life.
