Rhodochrosite: the forbidden bacon!

Background information!

There is a long history with Rhodochrosite being written about and mined. In 1813, Rhodochrosite was written about by J. F. L. Haussmann in relation to a mineral that he found in modern-day Romania. In 1873 the Incas referred to this stone as Inca Rose, and they believed that this crystal was the transformed blood of their fallen rulers. From 1913-1937 the mining for Rhodochrosite began to slow since there were problems with the mining techniques used for this crystal. In 1937, Dr. Franz Mansfeld found a huge deposit of Rhodochrosite and ended up mining 10,000 pounds of this raw material. This boosted the demand for Rhodochrosite across Europe, and also boosted the popularity for small carvings in this material.

The geology behind Rhodochrosite!

Rhodochrosite is a mineral composed of manganese carbonate or MnCO3. It is commonly found in ore veins and forms in mild temperatures in metamorphic and sedimentary deposits. Magnesium, iron and calcium are common substitutes for manganese in the crystal structure since Rhodochrosite is a relatively rare material. The manganese gives Rhodochrosite its color, and locality can also affect this. The color seen here can range from light pink to bright red, and It’s rated at a 3.5-4 on the MOHS hardness scale. Some notable places that this beautiful stone can be found are Romania, South Africa, Butte Montana, Argentina and Leadville Colorado.

More information!

Rhodochrosite can form as stalactites when water drips down from manganese-rich rocks. This occurrence creates a beautiful banded look. Rhodochrosite is often polished and shaped into slabs, cabochons and towers since the banding is most present in these forms. The less black manganese (oxide of iron and manganese) and more pink/red color that is seen within this crystal, makes it “gemmy” and a higher quality. In the crystal world, the term “gemmy” refers to the quality and grade of a crystal which makes it a desired gemstone. When a Rhodochrosite piece is all pink or red and very vibrant, the price point can be quite high because of its quality.
